Kinnamos, John

Kinnamos, John
Author of a history of the reign of John II Komnenos and Manuel I Komnenos (qq.v.), covering the years 1l18-1176, thus continuing the work ofAnna Komnene (q.v.). Kinnamos was a secretary (grammatikos [q.v.]) of Manuel I, who he obviously admired, for Manuel's heroic deeds are lauded in a eulogistic manner. Yet he was hardly just a panegyrist, although he is sometimes compared unfavorably to Niketas Choniastes (q.v.) in this respect. The final portion of Kinnamos's work (preserved in a single 13th-century manuscript), which concerns the last years of Manuel I's reign, is missing.
